Rain Gardens: Putting Landscapes to Work
The Euclid Creek Watershed in Cuyahoga County is
applying innovative solutions to an old challenge faced by many urbanized
watersheds: relatively few acres of green space combined with the need
to reduce stormwater runoff. One of these solutions is use of rain gardens
to reduce storm water runoff and remove urban pollutants such as sediment,
metals, and phosphorous.
Earlier this year, the Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District
was awarded $9,450 from the Ohio Lake Erie Commission through the Lake
Erie Protection Fund Grant program to create rain gardens in the Euclid
Creek Watershed.
This summer, the Cuyahoga SWCD will plan, design, and
construct two rain gardens in the watershed and conduct two roundtable
meetings with landscape professionals to explore the policy and implementation
opportunities and challenges within Euclid Creek and its adjacent watersheds.
The goal of the project is to eventually develop a watershed-wide strategy
for utilizing rain gardens as one strategy for protecting their urban
rivers.
