What Do We Do About Kelsey Creek? A Case Study in Making the Difficult Decisions for Implementing Watershed Action Plans.

Date: May 18, 2012

Location: Schnee Learning Center, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221

Cost: $12 for box lunch and coffee (optional). Pay at the door - cash only.

Description: Implementation of endorsed watershed action plans is critical to addressing the most persistent causes of impairment to Ohio's surface waters. But how do we decide which projects to implement first, and which restoration and protection methods will give us the best return on investment?

This workshop will introduce a relatively simple decision tool to help you prioritize and select projects and strategies for achieving watershed action plan goals. We will demonstrate how the decision tool works with a case study of the Kelsey Creek, a tributary of the middle Cuyahoga River impacted by urban development. The decision tool allows you to prioritize projects and design strategies based on input from multiple stakeholders and multiple data sets.

Participants will learn how to use the decision tool and apply the tool to an urban stream that has been proposed as a potential stream restoration project. You will hear from local stakeholders and work in teams to identify and prioritize restoration strategies for Kelsey Creek. While this workshop will focus on an urban stream, the decision tool is applicable to both urban and rural watersheds.

This workshop is co-sponsored by the Ohio Watershed Professionals Association, a Division of the Water Management Association of Ohio.

Please join us for this introductory-level training about the Clean Water Act's wetland and stream alteration permit program. If you are concerned about development and other alteration activities affecting wetlands, streams or lakes in your area, you need to be familiar with Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, which regulates dredging and filling of wetlands and streams. This webinar will cover when a 404 permit is required, what the permit requires, and how you can influence the permitting process. We will also briefly cover the state's role in 404 permitting (401 water quality certification) and how you can engage in that process. Resources for learning more about the Act's 404 program and Ohio's related programs will also be provided.

ECO Farming Field day on August 19th. We are promoting a new integrated system of farming in the 21st Century. ECO Farming stands for Eternal No-till, Continuous Living Cover, and Other best management practices. Eternal no-till means keeping the soil undisturbed as much as possible to improve soil quality and soil health. Continuous living cover is growing a crop on the soil 100% of the calendar year and may include grain crops followed by cover crops, pasture, hay, or perennial crops. The goal is to have live roots to feed the soil microbes, recycle soil nutrients, and to protect the soil from soil erosion. Other BMP’s may include controlled traffic, water table management, integrated pest management, and manure management. This system of farming closely mimics and enhances natural cycles in the soil that conventional tillage destroys.

For more information, attend our ECO Farming Field day, August 19, 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM at the Jeff Rasawehr Farm, 8820 Kuck Road, Celina, Ohio 45822. Lunch is free but you must register by August 17th by calling 419-586-2179
